Not Old Age but Greatness

With the growing age man cannot become old. On the contrary, he becomes great with the growing age.  with the growing age, his maturity and experience expands.  The boundaries of his mind get extended. Ideas are greater than the age. We can conquer age when we live with the ideas.  A strong man's age is extended.  Don't leave study.

Business casual is expanding to include relaxed items with more streamlined silhoueets such as denim shirts, cargo pants, turtlenecks and 'swakets' (knitwear shaped as outerwear). While a majority of comapnies allow casual dress once a week, this number has been on the decline, leading to creative ways to dress down at work. -Katie R 1 Pinned from online.wsj.com nytimes.com This New York Times article describes an attitude that is present in the United States, and is inspired by CEO’s of mega successful companies. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are all college dropouts that adopted the mindset of college being an option and not mandatory, in order to land a great job. Their ability to think innovatively and creatively has got them to where they are now. Manner of Speaking "All the great speakers were bad speakers at first." — Ralph W. Emerson Skip to content Home About Me Contact Analyses of Speeches ← Rhetorical Devices: AntimetaboleRhetorical Devices: Polysyndeton → Rhetorical Devices: Asyndeton Posted on 12/06/2011 by John Zimmer This post is part of a series on rhetoric and rhetorical devices. For other posts in the series, please click this link. Device: Asyndeton Origin: From the Greek ἀσύνδετον (asindeton), meaning “unconnected”. In plain English: The omission of conjunctions such as “and”, “or”, “for” and “but” from a series of related phrases or clauses. Effect: Asyndeton adds speed and rhythm to the words. It leaves an impression that the list is not complete. For example, the sentence, “I play hockey, baseball and football.” conveys the notion that I play those three sports. The sentence, “I play, hockey, baseball, football.” conveys that I am an avid sportsman and leaves open the possibility (even the likelihood) that I play other sports as well. There is more drama to the sentence without the conjunction between the final two phrases or clauses. In an asyndeton with two phrases, there can be a feeling of parallelism, synonymity or emphasis. Compare: She’s a genius and a star. with She’s a genius, a star. Notes: Aristotle said that asyndeton is more effective in oratory than in writing. The example from Julius Caesar below is also an anaphora; the example from Abraham Lincoln below is also an epistrophe. A single sentence can incorporate more than one rhetorical device. If you want to use asyndeton to convey the impression that the list is not complete, your voice should not drop with the last phrase; rather, it should remain level or even rise slightly. Asyndeton is the structural opposite of polysyndeton. Examples: “I came, I saw, I conquered.” — Julius Caesar, shortly after the Battle of Zela, 47 BC ——— “… that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.“ — Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address, 19 November 1863 ——— “Duty, Honor, Country. Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn.” — General Douglas MacArthur, West Point Academy, New York, 12 May 1962 ——— “The union’s survival, its very existence, sent out a signal to all Hispanics that we were fighting for our dignity, that we were challenging and overcoming injustice, that we were empowering the least educated among us, the poorest among us. The message was clear. If it could happen in the fields, it could happen anywhere: in the cities, in the courts, in the city councils, in the state legislatures.“ — Cesar Chavez, Commonwealth Club, San Francisco, 9 November 1984 ——— “We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line.” — Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men (1992) ——— “Let’s take a look at the side. It’s really thin. It’s thinner than any smart phone out there, at 11.6 millimeters. Thinner than the Q, thinner than the BlackJack, thinner than all of them. It’s really nice.” — Steve Jobs, Macworld 2007 Keynote Address Please share this post with others. inShare More Like this: About John Zimmer A Canadian now living Switzerland, I am married, with two terrific teenage daughters. MacArthur’s speech is also textbook material for how pauses and slow, cadenced speech leave lasting impressoins. In the quote above, which took one minute, he used exactly 54 words, or just under one word a second. This is glacial compared to our everyday speech where we can rattle off about 300 (!) words per minute. Nevertheless, MacArthur does not make you fall asleep. Also, Jack Nicholson is just a damn good actor. Great clip. Best regards from Bonn, John Reply John Zimmer says: 24/01/2012 at 09:07 Thanks very much for the detailed comment, John. Your remark about MacArthur is particularly astute. A great example of how less really can be more. Cheers! Parallel syntax In rhetoric, Parallel Syntax (also known as parallel construction and parallelism) is a rhetorical device that consists of repetition among adjacent sentences or clauses. The repeated sentences or clauses provides emphasis to a center theme or idea the author is trying to convey.[1] Using Parallel syntax among two clauses is known as an Isocolon, when among three clauses it is known as a Tricolon. [1] Having similar syntactical structure among clauses or phrases helps the reader identify the similarity of ideas proposed within them. [2] Also, parallel syntax adds a figure of balance to sentences it is implemented into. [3] Parallel syntax is often used in conjunction with Antithesis, Anaphora, Asyndeton, Climax, Epistrophe and Symploce.[3] Examples References Last modified 7 hours ago MobileDesktop Content is available under CC BY-SA 3.0 unless otherwise noted. Asyndeton Asyndeton (from the Greek: ἀσύνδετον, "unconnected", sometimes called asyndetism) is a figure of speech in which one or several conjunctions are omitted from a series of related clauses.[1][2] Examples are veni, vidi, vici and its English translation "I came, I saw, I conquered". Its use can have the effect of speeding up the rhythm of a passage and making a single idea more memorable. Asyndeton may be contrasted with syndeton (syndetic coordination) and polysyndeton, which describe the use of one or multiple coordinating conjunctions, respectively. This page has some issues More generally, in grammar, an asyndetic coordination is a type of coordination in which no coordinating conjunction is present between the conjuncts.[citation needed][example needed] It does not involve omission, but is grouped with its opposite. :::: MENU :::: FacebookLinkedInPinterestTwitter MEDITATION TIPS: WHAT IS STANDING BETWEEN YOU AND INNER PEACE? Oct 22 / 20131 MEDITATION Meditation Tips: What is Standing between You and Inner Peace? Dammit, meditation is hard! To those of you who are new to the practice, this statement may come as quite a surprise considering the overwhelming amount of material in the wellness community that says otherwise. The truth is that for most of us who sit every day we are faced with a regular number of challenges that require an ongoing commitment to intense determination, intense willpower and intense love for the art of stillness. Ripe with the promise of peace, meditation has become a ubiquitous prescription for a world that is often overwhelming and stressful. Almost immediately, benefits of a regular mediation practice can become evident to you.  But like anything new, the novelty can wear off quickly and getting to the pillow can get harder. The practice can even seem like a chore at times. I used to sit and fight my mind, fidgeting and shifting between one butt cheek and the other, until finally I would just sort of give up.  Days would pass and suddenly I was back where I started, namely, not meditating. Over the years I’ve learned to always remember what meditation is and isn’t as well as develop a number of tactics  and meditation tips that I can use when I find my practice is becoming more difficult to maintain. A Meditation Reality Check 1.) Meditation Isn’t Special I can already hear devout practitioners gasping in shock! Let’s get clear though, I’m not saying meditation isn’t an incredible healing practice, but rather that meditation is just like everything else in our lives that we do repeatedly. After enough applications, our minds will ultimately get bored and start looking for the next best thing. This is human nature and something that we need to accept before moving forward. 2.) Meditation Is Physical Just because we get to sit or lay in stillness when we practice doesn’t mean that we aren’t involved in a physical practice. Being in stillness comes with many challenges outside of the mind. Our bodies get bored and we want to shift when our legs get tingly, we want to itch, we get distracted by a siren outside or the passing headlights of a car that create a momentary distraction behind out eyelids. 3.) Meditation Is Unpredictable Often times I hit the pillow after an amazing day, with not a care in the world, expecting to have the most splendid time accessing my stillness. These times can be some of the most challenging experiences for me because you never know what the mind has in store for you when you give it the time and openness that it needs to really let loose. It can be especially frustrating when you finish meditating with the feeling that you’ve got more going on inside your head than when you sat down.  Meditation Tips: Destroy Your Roadblocks to Inner Peace 1.) Forgive Yourself Nothing heals like forgiveness. Whenever your ego starts to sabotage your practice, remember that there is no rule book on meditation. You are likely reaping all of the benefits you need just by putting in the effort to get to your meditation pillow day after day. Regularly release any guilt you may have about missing a day or about having an especially tough meditation because holding onto it will only make it harder to continue practising tomorrow. 2.) Commit To Your Meditation This has been the most critical lesson for me to learn and is the one that I find makes the difference between a so-so session and a groundbreaking one. Most often, when we are struggling with anything, we just need to buck up and commit to seeing it through to the end. When I am faced with especially sluggish core muscles or a wandering mind, telling myself to commit usually gets me right back on track. Just take a moment to fix your posture, commit to not being lazy and get back to basics – your breath. 3.) Go With The Flow I’m going to repeat this point once again because it’s that important – there is no meditation rulebook! After nearly two decades of practice, I only know one thing is for sure and that is there is no tried and tested way to reach inner peace. Chanting may work some days, breath work may work others, focus and visualization on a blue moon in Taurus may work too, but the same circumstances the next day may perform completely differently. Be thankful that meditation will bring up what we need to process when we need to process it, be thankful for the tough days and be thankful for the easy peaceful days and most importantly, just keep meditating!
